CHI 2012 Workshop on Identity, Performativity, and HCI

CHI 2012 – Workshop on Identity, Performativity, and HCI

Website: http://performativehci.wordpress.com

Important dates:
Extended deadline:Jan 23, 2012
Acceptance notification: Feb 10, 2012
Workshop date: May 6, 2012

About:
Identity is a theme spanning multiple discourses, such as feminist HCI, and
ICT4D, becoming notable as a culturally understood phenomenon within
third-wave HCI. This workshop extends current thinking about identity
toward performative aspects: how self and identity is constituted, how this
relates to digital technology, and what this means for design and use of
such technology. As technology’s growth in domestic, social and intimate
contexts suggests a new consideration of how identity is invoked, we
propose to examine philosophical commitments, methodological implications,
and pragmatic aspects of putting performativity to work, identifying blind
spots and obstacles that hamper research and practice in this area. This
one day workshop will use hands-on critique, panel discussions, and brief
presentations, to explore how HCI can respond to the challenge of who we
are and what we might become in our pursuit of digitally mediated futures.

Call for papers:
To this end, we welcome theoretical discussion, themes of interest,
methodological implications, challenges, blind spots, and pragmatic aspects
of designing technology in relation to identity, taking a performative
stance. Some of the issues could include:
~ What new insights performative theory can offer in light of currently
used HCI frameworks
~ How best to put this theory to work to be actionable for HCI research
and/or practice
~ Beyond offering a critical lens, ways that performative theory can
contribute to understandings of identity and experience of use
~ Using this theory as a framework for empowerment and social change with
respect to identity politics
~ The relations between experience, design, and performativity
~ Case studies of specific instances of performative identity within HCI,
such as gender, sexuality, race, class, roles, power, etc

We invite HCI researchers and designer to submit a 3-5 page position paper
in the ACM Extended Abstracts format that addresses or extends the workshop
themes, as outlined above. Email your paper to
performative.hci[at]gmail.comwith subject “CHI 2012 Workshop
Submission” on or before Jan 23, 2012. The workshop organizers will jury all position papers. All participants must register for the workshop and for at least one day of the
conference.
