The work presented at TEI focuses on physical interaction with
computing technology and addresses design challenges, theories,
experiences, systems, and new developments. The intimate size of this
single-track conference provides a unique forum for exchanging ideas and
presenting innovative work through talks, interactive exhibits, demos,
hands-on studios, posters, art installations and performances.

Research on tangible, embodied and embedded interaction has gained
substantial visibility and activity over the past decade, under many
different names and research topics and disciplines, including tangible
interfaces, graspable interfaces, physical computing, tangible
interaction, IT product design, appliance design and interactive spaces.
It has also been associated with larger research areas, including mixed,
virtual, and augmented reality and ubiquitous and pervasive computing.
TEI brings together this emerging field, providing a meeting ground for
the diverse communities of research and practice – from computing,
hardware, and sensor technology, to HCI, interaction design and CSCW, to
product and industrial design and interactive arts. We invite
submissions from all of these perspectives: theoretical, conceptual,
technical, applied, or artistic. The conference is designed to provide
appropriate presentation forms for different types of contributions.
Accepted submissions of all types will be included in the Proceedings as
papers and will be integrated within the single-track conference.
Interdisciplinary submissions are particularly welcome.

Suggested Topics

Authors are invited to submit high-quality work detailing original
research that contributes to advancing this rapidly developing field.
Appropriate topics include but are not limited to:

• Tools to rapidly develop tangible, embedded and embodied user experiences
• Case studies and evaluations of working deployments
• Analysis of key challenges and proposals of research agendas
• Relation of tangible and embedded interaction to other paradigms
• Programming paradigms and tools, toolkits, software architectures
• Novel interactive uses of sensors+actuators, electronics+mechatronics
• Design guidelines, methods, and processes
• Novel application areas, innovative systems, industrial applications
• Theoretical foundations, frameworks, and concepts
• Philosophical, ethical & social implications
• Interfaces specific in form and context to particular cultures
• Advantages, weakness, affordances of tangible, embedded and embodied interaction
• Learning from the role of physicality in everyday environments
• Embodied interaction, movement, and choreography of interaction
• Organic User Interfaces: flexible, non-flat or actuated display interfaces
• Role of physicality in human perception, cognition and experience
• Teaching experiences, lessons learned, and best practices
• Standardization, production, and business applications

Papers may be 2, 4 or 8 pages long in the two-column ACM SIGCHI format.
They must be in PDF file format. Regardless of length, a paper may be
presented as a poster, talk or demo. Length must match the contribution,
and the same general criteria hold for all papers. All papers will
undergo the same review process and be published in the same way.
All work – both papers and optional video illustrations – must be
submitted electronically via the TEI 2014 Precision Conference site.
During submission, authors may propose the presentation format that they
feel best suits their contribution, which may include multiple
presentation forms. The available formats include:
• Poster
• Demo
• Talk
Please do consider the most appropriate presentation format for your
work. TEI particularly encourages demonstrations and installations by
publishing their descriptions in the full conference proceedings.
There will be a second submission opportunity for work in progress
until November 21st. Selected works will be presented during dedicated
poster sessions at TEI 2014 but are not published in the conference nor
online proceedings.

One author of each accepted submission must register for the conference
before the early registration deadline in order for the final paper
version to be published in the conference proceedings. Papers will be

General Infos

TEI 2014 also invites proposals for studios to be held in multiple
tracks on Sunday, February 16th, 2014. Successful studios offer hand-on
experiences for conference attendees that merge design, art, and
technology. Studios accommodate around 15 participants each and are open
to anyone who has registered for the conference (additional fees might
be required). Each Studio will be represented by a 4-page extended
abstract that will be included in the Proceedings and published in the
ACM Digital Library. Organizers are also encouraged to arrange for later
publications of a studio’s creative output.

Studios should encourage new and enriching perspectives on the field of
tangible, embedded, and embodied interaction. Studios are an excellent
opportunity for organizers to share their work with other professionals,
engage in co-creation, and gain feedback to broaden the limits of their
research experience. Studio topics can include (but are not limited to)
the exploration of new tools, prototype design techniques, creative
approaches to emerging and traditional trades, and research-oriented
topics. We look forward to creative and original studios that will open
attendees’ minds to fresh and innovative experiences in the field!

• Digital music and circuit bending
• Unexpected design with chemical and basic elements
• Intelligent fabrics, wearables and tailoring
• Connections between computing and art craft
• Smart tangibles
• Innovative Sketching techniques
• Toy design

• New architecture design and models
• Open (hardware & software) Design

Studio Review Process

The review process will take into account the organizers’ ability to
clearly articulate a plan for a studio that will provoke discussion of
TEI-related issues or lead to a rich hands-on experience, in a half- or
full-day time slot. Additional criteria are: the expected community
interest level in the topic, available equipment, and how the topics and
processes covered complement other studio offerings. The Studios Chairs
may suggest organizers of submissions that are similar in topic to
collaborate on a joint session. In order for the Studio extended
abstract to appear in the conference proceedings, studio organizers must
register for the TEI conference by the early registration deadline.

Organizer Responsibilities

Before the Conference

• Arrange for delivery of needed studio materials (options include
bringing items in-person or shipping to the venue)
• Optional: call for paper submissions and manage a review of papers
• Prepare for 12 to 15 participants
• Develop a final agenda of activities and discuss it with TEI 2014
Studio Chairs
• Recruit participants: organizers of an accepted session are
encouraged to set up and maintain a web page providing information about
their studio
At the Conference

Organizers are responsible for setting up the studio before the
session, leading discussions and sustaining participation. Organizers
will present the results of the session to the entire TEI 2014

After the Conference

It is expected that Studios’ results will be communicated to a larger
audience. In addition to any presentations, organizers will make
material available about the studio for public consumption. This
material can range from online photos and videos, design documents
and/or schematics, a blog, or a report for publication in an ACM
Bulletin or a similar venue.
